Gets better the more I use it

I've had the Barron for over a year and it has developed exactly the sort of character I hoped for. The waxed canvas has picked up creases and variations from daily use, while the leather straps have softened considerably. I don't baby it at all. It gets put on the floor, tossed in the car and taken with me whenever I'm out for the day. Despite that, the stitching and hardware have remained solid.

Useful exterior storage

The outside pockets are where my keys and smaller items usually end up. Saves me from digging through the main compartment every time.

Canvas starts fairly stiff

Mine felt quite structured when it arrived, especially compared with my old soft canvas backpack. After several months it has loosened up and looks much more natural. I actually prefer the way it sits now.

My everyday rucksack

I originally bought this because I wanted something more interesting than a standard zip backpack. The cross straps caught my attention, but the practical side is what has kept me using it. There's plenty of room for what I normally carry, and the exterior pockets mean smaller items don't disappear into the bottom. After a year and a half the canvas has a great worn-in appearance and the leather looks even better than when it was new.

Good everyday dimensions

The 30 cm width works well for me. It holds a surprising amount without feeling excessively wide when I'm walking around town.

Works well for commuting

I take public transport most days and wanted something sturdy that wasn't overly bulky. The 11 cm depth keeps it reasonably close to my back, while the taller main compartment gives me enough room for my normal workday things.

Hardware feels substantial

The buckles and other metal pieces don't feel lightweight or decorative. Everything has a sturdy feel to it.

Has been everywhere with me

This bag has seen a lot more use than I expected when I bought it. It started as a weekend backpack, then gradually became the one I use for commuting, road trips and just about everything else. The waxed canvas naturally shows marks from use now, which suits the design perfectly. The leather cross straps have softened and darkened slightly, and the entire backpack feels properly broken in. Nearly two years later, I haven't had any problems with the stitching or hardware.

Easy to carry

Once I adjusted the straps properly it sat very comfortably on my back.

Not as quick as a normal zip backpack

The strap setup takes an extra moment compared with simply opening a zipper. That was noticeable at first, but I've gotten used to it. I bought this partly because I liked the traditional rucksack appearance, so I don't really consider it a problem anymore.

Good balance of capacity and size

I've owned larger backpacks that were more useful for travel but annoying for ordinary daily use. This feels like a better middle ground. The 42 cm height gives me enough vertical room for books and an extra layer, but the relatively slim depth keeps it from becoming cumbersome.

Great for weekends

This has become the bag I grab for errands, coffee shops and days out. Enough space for what I need without carrying a large travel backpack.

The worn-in look suits it

I wouldn't buy this backpack if I wanted something that stayed perfectly pristine. The waxed canvas develops marks and creases naturally, and that's a big part of the appeal for me. Mine looks much more interesting after seventeen months than it did straight out of the box. The leather straps have also softened nicely while the reinforced areas still feel very sturdy.

Useful main compartment

There's enough open space inside for larger things instead of having the interior divided into lots of tiny sections. I use the exterior pockets for anything I need to keep separate.

Better than the technical backpacks I owned

Most of my previous backpacks were outdoor-style bags covered in synthetic straps and plastic clips. They worked fine but always looked like hiking equipment. The Barron gives me the same everyday usefulness in a design I actually enjoy carrying. The waxed canvas and leather have much more personality, especially now that both materials have started to age.

Comfortable for longer walks

I've carried it around for several hours at a time without any issues. Adjusting the cross straps correctly made the fit much better.

Slimmer than I expected

The 11 cm depth is fairly slim compared with some rucksacks I've owned. At first I thought I might need more room, but for everyday use I've actually come to prefer the narrower shape. If I were packing for several days I'd choose something bigger.

Two years of regular use

I've had the charcoal version for about two years and it has been used far more than I originally expected. It's been on trains, road trips, weekends away and countless ordinary days around town. The canvas has plenty of marks now and the leather straps have darkened and softened, but that aging is exactly what makes the bag look good. Structurally it has remained dependable, particularly around the reinforced stitching and strap attachment points.

Handy pockets

I keep the little things I reach for most in the exterior pockets. Much better than having keys disappear into the bottom of the main compartment.

Great commuter rucksack

The tall shape works well for my everyday carry, and because it isn't excessively deep I don't feel like I'm knocking into everyone when the train is busy. I also appreciate that it doesn't look like a typical office laptop backpack.

Made to look better used

Mine definitely doesn't look new anymore, and I mean that as a compliment. The canvas has lighter and darker areas from being handled and folded, and the leather cross straps have picked up their own patina. It suits the old-school rucksack design much better now. I've carried fairly heavy loads in it as well and haven't seen any problems developing around the stitching.

Tobacco brown has character

I chose tobacco brown because I wanted the most vintage-looking option. Very happy with it, especially with the darker leather straps.

Takes a little breaking in

Both the canvas and leather felt fairly firm at first. Regular use has made the whole backpack sit more naturally, and the shoulder straps are noticeably more comfortable now than they were during the first week.

Good for an overnight trip

I've used mine for several overnight trips when I didn't want to bring luggage. The open main compartment works well for a change of clothes and a few other essentials, while the exterior pockets keep smaller things accessible. It isn't enormous, which I actually prefer because it stops me from overpacking.

Carries comfortably

Practical without looking boring

That's what I like most. It's a genuinely useful everyday backpack, but the cross straps and mix of canvas and leather give it much more personality than the usual commuter bags.
