Love the roll top

The roll-top is what sold me. I can keep it fairly compact most days and open it up when I need the extra room.

Finally enough room for unpredictable days

Some days I leave home with very little and come back carrying twice as much, which is why the roll-top design appealed to me. The Edril gives me a lot more flexibility than the fixed-size backpack I had before. I use the front pockets for the things I reach for regularly and leave the main compartment open for larger items. It's a simple setup but works extremely well for the way I actually use a backpack.

Very useful front pockets

I keep my smaller everyday things in the front rather than having them disappear into the large main compartment. Makes a big difference with a taller bag like this.

Larger than my old backpack

The 45 cm height was more substantial than I was used to, so the first few days felt different. Once I adjusted the shoulder straps and started making use of the extra space, I appreciated the size a lot more. Definitely better suited to someone who wants capacity rather than a small minimalist pack.

My weekend bag now

I originally bought this as an everyday backpack but quickly realized the adjustable roll-top makes it useful for weekends away too. There's enough space in the main compartment for clothing and the smaller exterior pockets keep the things I need quickly within reach. Mine has been used regularly for well over a year and the waxed canvas has developed a great broken-in appearance. The leather trim has aged nicely alongside it.

Khaki was the right choice

Went back and forth between khaki and coffee before ordering. Very happy with the khaki. The leather accents stand out nicely against the canvas.

A practical layout

The interior sections help keep the larger compartment under control, while the front pockets handle all the small things. I was worried a tall backpack would become a bottomless pit, but that hasn't really happened.

The canvas gets better with use

I've never tried to keep this looking brand new. It gets thrown in the car, set down wherever there's space and carried in all sorts of weather. After a year and a half the waxed canvas has picked up plenty of character and the leather pieces have darkened slightly with use. Nothing about that makes it look worn out to me. If anything, I prefer it now.

Good amount of space

The 38 by 45 cm footprint gives me considerably more usable room than the backpack it replaced. The 15 cm depth is useful without making it feel ridiculously bulky.

Different from everything else

The roll-top, leather straps and canvas body give it a lot more character than the plain backpacks I was looking at. I've had several people ask about it.

Useful for work and weekends

During the week I don't need all the available capacity, so I keep the top rolled down fairly tight. On weekends or short trips I can make better use of the taller shape. That flexibility is probably my favorite thing about it. It means I don't need one small backpack for work and another larger one when I'm carrying more.

Roll top takes an extra moment

It's not as quick to get into as a basic zip backpack, especially when everything is secured. I knew that going in though. I prefer the appearance and the ability to adjust the capacity, so for me the tradeoff has been worth it.

Good choice if you carry a lot

I'm not a minimalist when it comes to what I bring with me during the day. Chargers, an extra layer, notebook and plenty of miscellaneous things usually end up in my backpack. The spacious main compartment handles that much better than my previous bag. I also appreciate having the exterior pockets because I don't have to dig through everything just to find something small.

Black looks sharp

I went with black because I wanted something understated. The brown leather details give it enough contrast that it still looks interesting.

Good for short trips

I've used it for a couple of overnight trips now. The flexible main compartment is much more useful for clothing than the structured backpack I used to travel with.

Built for being used

This isn't one of those bags that I feel the need to keep pristine. Mine has been through commutes, weekend trips, airports and plenty of days riding around in the back seat. The waxed canvas shows the history of that use, which I personally like. The stress points and stitching have remained solid and the leather trim has become softer over time. Almost two years in, it's still the backpack I reach for when I need to carry more than the basics.

The tall shape makes a noticeable difference. I can bring an extra layer or a few additional items without immediately running out of room.

Much more versatile than expected

I thought I'd mostly use this for weekends, but it has ended up coming to work with me quite often. When I don't need much space, I just keep the roll tighter. If I pick something up on the way home or need to carry additional clothing, there's room to expand. The front pockets are useful enough that I rarely need to open the main compartment for small things.

Canvas has a rugged feel

The waxed canvas felt a little stiffer than I expected when it arrived. After several months of regular use it has relaxed and looks much more natural. I prefer it now that it has some creases and character.

One backpack instead of two

Before buying this I had a smaller bag for commuting and a larger backpack for weekend travel. The Edril has pretty much replaced both. I don't have to fill it completely for everyday use, and when I need the additional room the roll-top gives me flexibility. The exterior pockets also keep the things I use frequently from getting buried. It's one of the more practical bag designs I've owned.

Comfortable when full

I've had it fairly loaded on a few trips and the adjustable shoulder straps have remained comfortable. Getting the straps positioned correctly makes a big difference with a taller bag.

Coffee has aged nicely

The coffee finish already had a rugged look when it arrived, and a year of use has only improved it. The canvas has developed natural variations and the leather trim has become noticeably more broken in.

Front storage is well placed

I use the exterior pockets constantly. Much easier than reaching all the way into the main compartment for keys or other small things.

Two years and a lot of miles

Mine has been on more trips than I can remember at this point. It's been packed full, put under airplane seats, thrown into car trunks and used as an everyday backpack between trips. The canvas naturally shows its age now, but that's exactly what I expect from waxed canvas. The leather trim has also developed a lot of character. Most importantly, the construction has stood up to everything I've asked of it.

Good proportions

The 15-inch width and 5.9-inch depth give it a lot of useful space. Doesn't feel excessively wide on my back either.

Not for someone wanting a small pack

This is a genuinely tall, roomy backpack. I probably bought more capacity than I need for an ordinary workday, although I've been very glad to have it whenever I travel. The roll-top helps keep the profile under control when the bag isn't full.

My go-to road trip bag

I use it during the week occasionally, but road trips are where this backpack really earns its keep for me. The large main compartment handles clothing and other bulky items easily, and I use the front pockets for things I want access to during stops. The canvas construction means I'm also not worried about treating it too delicately. More than a year in, it has held up very well.

My husband takes it everywhere

I bought the khaki version for my husband because he wanted a larger backpack that didn't look like technical hiking gear. He uses it for work, weekends and short trips now. The roll-top gives him room when he needs it, and he likes having the smaller front pockets for things he doesn't want buried in the main compartment. After a year the canvas looks nicely broken in.
