Handles everything I carry to work

I tend to carry more than just a laptop, so a lot of the slimmer leather backpacks weren't going to work for me. The Hawthorne has enough depth for my computer, headphones, notebook, charger and a few other things without everything being packed tightly together. I also appreciate the separate front storage because I can get to smaller items without opening the whole bag. After more than a year of regular commuting, the leather has softened nicely and the backpack still feels very solid.

Front pockets are genuinely useful

I keep my cables and smaller everyday things in front. It makes a big difference when I'm trying to find something quickly.

Larger than my previous work bag

The 18 cm depth gives you a lot of usable space, but it also means this isn't an ultra-slim commuter backpack. It took me a little while to get used to the size. For days when I'm carrying my laptop plus several other things, though, I definitely appreciate the extra room.

Good replacement for my old commuter bag

My previous backpack had plenty of pockets but looked very sporty. I wanted the same practicality in something I could carry into the office without looking like I was headed to the gym. This has worked really well. The leather gives it a much more polished appearance while the layout is still practical enough for everyday commuting.

Laptop compartment works well

I like having my computer in its own padded section instead of sitting loose with everything else. Makes the main compartment much easier to organize too.

Has taken a lot of daily use

I've been carrying mine to work for close to two years now. It gets put on the floor beside my desk, thrown into the car and carried through the city several days a week. The leather naturally has scratches, creases and darker areas now, but those changes suit the bag rather than making it look worn out. The important parts have held up very well. The shoulder straps still feel secure, the zippers run properly and I haven't noticed any stitching starting to give way.

The padded straps help quite a bit when I've loaded it with my laptop and everything else I need for a long day.

Easy to keep organized

The combination of the interior sections and front zip pockets means I don't have everything sitting in one big compartment. I know where my cables, keys and smaller things are now.

Leather starts fairly structured

Mine was noticeably firm when it arrived. I was expecting something softer straight away, but regular use has made a big difference. The leather has loosened up while the backpack itself has kept its overall shape, which I actually prefer now.

Useful for short work trips

I've taken this on several overnight work trips because it holds more than my previous leather backpack. The deeper main compartment gives me room for my normal work setup plus a few additional items, and the separate laptop section keeps everything sensible. Once I arrive, it still looks appropriate enough to carry straight into the office. The leather has also developed a nice patina from traveling.

The 30 cm width keeps the bag manageable, while the extra depth gives me enough room for the things that wouldn't fit in my old slim backpack.

Leather looks much better broken in

When the bag first arrived the leather was darker and more uniform. After well over a year of being carried regularly, there are lighter areas, creases and small marks across the surface. That's exactly what I wanted. It now looks like a bag that belongs to me rather than something straight off a shelf. Structurally it still feels excellent and the hardware has held up without any issues.

Good back padding

I didn't pay much attention to the padded back panel when ordering, but I appreciate it now. Makes a difference when the bag is loaded.

Everything finally has a place

I carry a surprising amount of little stuff for work and used to spend half my time digging around the bottom of my old backpack. The Hawthorne's separate front storage and internal organization make that much easier. I can keep the laptop separate and still know exactly where my charger, keys and cables are.

More capacity means more weight

It's easy to load this up because there's quite a bit of room inside. I learned pretty quickly that just because everything fits doesn't mean I need to carry it all. The padded straps do help, but I enjoy the bag more when I keep my load reasonable.

Good office backpack

Professional enough for work without feeling overly formal. I like the simple shape and the fact that most of the utility comes from the pockets rather than decorative straps.

Still my main backpack after two years

I bought this because I was tired of replacing cheaper work backpacks every couple of years. The Hawthorne has now reached roughly the two-year mark and I'm still using it several times a week. The leather has changed quite a bit, especially around the areas I handle most, but that's one of the reasons I enjoy it. The bag feels broken in rather than worn out. I've had no trouble with the main zipper, front pockets or shoulder straps despite carrying it fairly heavily on some days.

Having a padded compartment means I don't need a separate sleeve anymore. It keeps the computer away from everything else I throw into the main section.

Great for days when I carry more

Front storage is excellent

The smaller zipper pocket is perfect for the things I want immediately accessible. I use it every day.

Has developed plenty of character

I chose Chestnut specifically because I wanted the leather to show some variation as it aged. Mine certainly does now. The front has lighter areas and small scratches from regular use, while other parts have darkened from handling. I haven't done anything special beyond basic care and occasional conditioning. After a year and a half the leather feels softer, but the backpack still feels strong where it matters.

Not for someone wanting ultra slim

This has a fairly generous main compartment, so I'd look elsewhere if your priority is the thinnest possible laptop backpack. I specifically wanted more capacity, though, and for that purpose the proportions work very well.

Comfortable enough for my daily walk

My commute includes around twenty minutes of walking each way, which was one reason I wanted proper padding instead of plain leather shoulder straps. The padded straps and back panel have been comfortable even when I have the laptop and several other things inside.

My favorite bag for work travel

This has become the backpack I bring whenever I have a short business trip. There's enough room for my laptop and the things I want with me during the journey, and the front pockets keep smaller items from getting lost. Once I'm at my destination, the leather makes it look perfectly appropriate for meetings. Mine has been through quite a few airports now and the signs of travel have only improved the appearance.

Useful without being complicated

There's enough organization to keep things separate, but not so many compartments that I forget where I put something. The layout makes sense for daily use.

Leather is breaking in nicely

It has already softened noticeably and I'm starting to see more variation in the finish. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

A dependable daily bag

After almost two years, this has become one of those purchases I don't think about much because it simply works. I load it in the morning, carry it to work and put it down wherever there's room. The leather is much softer than it was originally and has plenty of natural marks now. Despite that amount of use, the straps, hardware and zippers are still functioning properly. I'd happily choose the same bag again.

From the front it doesn't look enormous, but the 18 cm depth gives the main compartment a surprising amount of usable room. Very practical for my routine.
