My everyday office bag

I've carried the Thornton to work almost every weekday for the last year and a half. The wide opening sounded like a minor feature when I ordered it, but it's probably what I appreciate most now. I can see everything inside and pull out my laptop or documents without having to dig around. The cognac leather has also developed darker areas around the handles and some lighter marks on the corners. It looks much better broken in than it did brand new.

Good size for commuting

My 15-inch laptop, notebook, charger and a couple of folders fit comfortably. The 8 cm depth keeps it from feeling bulky on the train.

Quite firm at first

The leather was more structured than I expected when it arrived. It took a few weeks before the handles and opening started feeling more natural. Eight months later it has softened nicely while still keeping the shape that attracted me to it in the first place.

A much better setup for work

I replaced a soft messenger bag with this and the difference in organization is substantial. Papers stay flatter, my laptop has its own place and I can open the bag wide enough to actually see what I'm looking for. I've been using it for nearly a year and the structured body has held up extremely well.

The leather gets better with use

Mine is coming up on two years old and has been used heavily throughout that time. It goes on the train with me several days a week and has been on plenty of work trips as well. The chestnut leather now has creases, small scratches and darker areas where I handle it most often. None of that bothers me because it has created a really nice patina. The important parts have held up too. The zipper still runs smoothly, the handles remain secure and the shoulder strap hardware feels as solid as ever.

The 8 cm depth gives you useful space, but this isn't the sort of briefcase where you can throw in a large lunch, bulky headphones and half your desk. For a laptop, paperwork, charger and normal daily essentials it's excellent. I actually prefer the narrower profile because it keeps the bag comfortable during my commute.

Perfect for client visits

I spend several days each month visiting clients and needed something that looked professional but was still practical to carry around the city. The Thornton has been a very good fit. My laptop and documents stay organized, the wide opening makes getting things out during meetings easy and the shoulder strap is useful between appointments. After fourteen months the leather has developed enough character that the bag no longer looks brand new, which I prefer.

Cognac ages beautifully

I specifically chose the cognac version because I wanted something that would develop visible character with use. Nineteen months later it has done exactly that. The handles have darkened slightly, the corners have lighter areas and there are small marks across the front from commuting. I haven't tried to keep it pristine and I think that's why it looks so good now. The bag itself still feels very solid and the structured shape hasn't collapsed.

Wide opening makes a real difference

I didn't realize how annoying the narrow opening on my previous bag was until I switched to this. The Thornton opens enough that I can actually see the contents instead of reaching around blindly. It makes organizing cables, notebooks and documents much easier. More than a year later, that feature is still one of the main reasons I recommend the bag.

Some weight to it

It's heavier than the fabric laptop bag I was using before, especially once the laptop and charger are inside. That's expected with full leather and a structured design. The shoulder strap helps quite a bit and the extra weight feels worth it for the quality.

Two years of regular use

I've owned the Thornton for roughly two years now and it has been my primary work bag for almost that entire period. It's been through countless train journeys, several flights and plenty of normal day-to-day abuse. The leather is no longer perfect and that's exactly what I like about it. There are creases and tonal variations all over the surface now. Structurally, though, very little has changed. The handles are secure, the main zipper works properly and the shoulder strap attachments haven't shown any signs of failing.

I normally take this alongside a carry-on suitcase when traveling for business. My laptop, charger, documents and travel essentials stay in the Thornton where they're easy to access. The wide opening is especially convenient at airport security because I'm not fighting with the bag to remove my laptop. Once I arrive, it looks professional enough to take straight into a meeting.

Made for actual everyday use

I don't treat this like a delicate leather accessory. It gets put on floors, under desks and into overhead compartments just like any other work bag. Seventeen months of that has left plenty of small marks and scratches, but they blend naturally into the leather. Nothing important has come loose or stopped working. It feels like a briefcase that's designed to develop character rather than stay perfect.

Capacity is sensible

It carries a normal office setup very comfortably but isn't designed for bulky extras. For me that's a positive because I wanted a proper briefcase rather than something halfway between a briefcase and travel bag.

Much better than carrying a backpack

I wanted something more polished for work but was reluctant to give up the convenience of a backpack. The adjustable strap solved most of that concern. I use it over my shoulder on the way to work, then carry the Thornton by the handles once I'm in the office. The laptop compartment fits my 15-inch machine well and the wide opening makes the interior considerably easier to use than other briefcases I've owned.

Chestnut has developed a beautiful finish

The chestnut leather looked fairly uniform when the briefcase was new. After twenty months of regular commuting, it has developed a much richer appearance. The handles are darker, the corners show subtle wear and there are plenty of little marks across the surface. I use conditioner every few months but otherwise just let it age naturally. The wide opening still holds its structure well and all of the hardware continues to feel secure.
